The BEST Christmas Movie List to Watch This Weekend
By Vanessa Palencia
Can you guys believe it? Christmas is this weekend! Even if you’re completely spent from all of the shopping and living your day-to-day life, I think we can all agree that a weekend full of Christmas movie marathons with a frothy cup of hot chocolate in hand is what the holiday season is all about. While there are tons of Christmas and holiday-themed movies out there, I've compiled a list of a few of my all-time favorite movies, some of which you’ve most likely heard and/or seen before, but these are worthy of playing time and again no matter what the season! So bundle up, grab some popcorn, and hit that couch! Don’t forget to let me know which of these are your favorites or if you have another favorite holiday movie that isn't on here. I really would love to know!
I absolutely love this movie to death because it’s not just for kids! It truly captures the magic and heart of Christmas. As adults, the magic starts to wear off when we realize that there’s no Man-in-the-Red-Suit that delivers wonderful gifts. Instead, it becomes our responsibility to buy our friends and relatives gifts. But after watching this movie, you'll feel reborn in the Christmas spirit!
Another movie that’s not just for kids! Home Alone follows the unfortunate, but amusing adventure of Kevin McCallister who accidentally gets left behind at home. This movie is hilarious and a perfectly light-hearted movie that teaches you to not judge a book by its cover and reminds you of the real reason behind Christmas: to cherish and spend time with family and loved ones! It also really makes you wonder whether you would've been able to pull off the same amazing stunts and tricks that 8-year-old Kevin did.
Although normally considered a chick flick, most of the important moments in this film happen around the holidays, so I think that automatically qualifies this as a holiday romance movie! This is a must-watch, so if you haven't seen this, you need to watch this immediately! Bridget Jones's vibrant personality and crazy rollercoaster dating life will have you laughing, cringing, and wanting more.
Another favorite of mine!! The innocence and consistently positive personality that Buddy the Elf exudes for the people around him and for everything involving Christmas just makes you want to wrap him in protective bubble wrap so no one can hurt him while also simultaneously singing Christmas carols. After watching this movie, you’ll want to do everything in your power to preserve the Christmas spirit. But beware, if you watch this, you won’t tolerate other people talking bad about Santa!!
Jim Carrey played the part of the Grinch perfectly!! You also can't deny that the people of Whoville look so real! From their interesting facial features and over-the-top hair-dos to their blazing Christmas lights and their overwhelmingly hurried excitement at the thought of Christmas, the magic of Whoville invites you into a whole other world of Christmas.
I normally avoid Christmas romance movies because they tend to be overly-cheesy, but this movie immediately won my heart! I laughed, I cried, I yelled profane things in my head at certain characters...you get the point. The authenticity of the love in each storyline (there are 5) tugs at your heartstrings and leaves you emotionally attached to the characters, but what I really love about this movie is that despite separate storylines, each story is connected somehow through another mutual or secondary character. It’s also a bonus that this rom-com features Hugh Grant! *SWOON*
