From You, I Learned

From You, I Learned

By Ilene Arevalo

From you, I learned
to have morals and values for
myself and my future
empower, listen, and have courage.
Thank you.

From you, I learned
how to clean
using Clorox bleach
and Windex to keep
our home uncontaminated
and spotless, and I complain
because I cannot clean better.
Thank you.

From you, I learned
to wake up early
and I remember you would say
“Vany son las 7:00am, vas a llegar tarde.”
But in reality it was 6:30am.
I still laugh when I think about it.
and now, as a young adult
I am responsible.
Thank you.

From you, I learned
the daily nutrition is
beans and rice.
coffee con leche is breakfast.
For dinner, more beans and rice
and salsa dancing in the kitchen.
Thank you.

From you, I learned
to be strong.
When Andrea passed away
you kept your head up high.
Thank you.

From you, I learned
to never take
life for granted.
Once
you told me
“Vany te amo mas que la luna”
and I said
“I know, I love you more.”
