While it’s difficult not to dwell on the regressive turns society has made as of late (*Ahem* Muslim Bans 1 and 2), it’s important for us to locate and focus on the progressive ones.
In case you’re having trouble finding a source of progress in society, look no further than last week’s launch of STELLAR Beauty products at Sephora. STELLAR is an all-inclusive new brand that caters specifically to the medium skin tone, something no other makeup brand has done yet.
While brands like IMAN Cosmetics have managed to target the darker end of the spectrum, the medium-skin tone has been left underserved. Until now, that is.
The brand serves as Television Personality Monika Deol’s debut in the cosmetics industry. Deol “created STELLAR because [she] felt that there was a gap in the market that did not address the fastest growing demographic in North America-that being beauty consumers who come from a heritage that gives them a medium skin tone.” After spending many years in various makeup chairs, watching artists scramble to create a makeshift color for her, she decided to take charge.
In order to assess the market, or lack thereof, Deol “spent countless hours charting every shade of every foundation brand sold at Sephora.” She found a large gap in the middle of the Pantone skin tone chart which grew considerably after she eliminated foundations that sell for over $50. “This was [her] AHA! Moment.” After hiring a research firm to conduct an independent study of the market and receiving the same results, Deol took it upon herself to fill the gap in the middle of the spectrum.
STELLAR sends a powerful message about diversity that is absolutely crucial today. While the colors available can be used by those of any skin color, the brand pays special attention to those of Hispanic, African-American, and Asian descent. 17 of the 22 shades available are specifically made for medium skin tones.
I do realize that this article is a far cry from my last one regarding makeup. Part of my personal reluctance to wear makeup stems from the irritation that comes with trying to find my shade. I often have to tediously mix foundations to create a semblance of the right color for myself. Once I’m able to find the right mix, it’s only a matter of time before one of the colors I use is discontinued. Now that STELLAR is in stores, I know that my exact color is represented and the colors of my fellow beige sisters are as well! An added bonus is that all products are vegan as well as fragrance and cruelty free! Deol hopes “that STELLAR will fill a need in a market that is underserved and incredibly important. [She is] hoping that [her] informed point of view-being from that very market- will help [her] to understand and serve it well.”
While I will continue to refrain from wearing makeup much of the time, you better believe that I’ll be wearing STELLAR on the days I do decide to go glam, and I highly encourage you all to do the same!
