The Practical Guide to Treatin Yo Self
by Thao Nguyen
I would like to personally thank the writers of Parks and Rec. Thanks to the geniuses who wrote the amazing “treat yo self” episode, my closet has nearly doubled in size.
Now every time I want to get myself something, Donna Meagle and Tom Haverford are in my head telling me to treat myself. But unlike Donna and Tom, I don’t just treat myself once a year; it’s more like once a week. Which is a problem, considering I’m running out of space in my room, and the budget I gave myself for splurging keeps changing.
If you’ve found yourself in a similar predicament, I’m here to be the Jerry Gergich in your life and ruin everything. Here are 4 reasons to think twice before treating yo self.
You’re treating yo self for no reason. The point of treat yo self is to reward yourself for doing a lot of work, or for overcoming something difficult. Doing it for no reason at all will quickly get you into shopaholic zone, and when you do finally treat yourself for something significant, it won’t feel as good.
It is exorbitantly overpriced. Debt is no way to treat yo self. If you’re trying to treat yo self with something that is ridiculously out of your budget, be careful. Will it really make you happy if you’re still paying it off months later? If it will, go for it. If not, try to find something similar and cheaper!
Buying yourself stuff is the only way to cheer yourself up. If you’ve gotten yourself a nice gift at some point within the last 10 days as a pick me up and already need something new to get you smiling again, put your credit card away. Remember, treat yo self is supposed to be special, not something to be done over and over again. If this is your only source of happiness, it’s time reevaluate your life, not add more clutter to it.
You’re buying something that’s “on trend.” Are you only treating yourself to something that is in fashion right now? Is it something you really like, or are you only getting it because it’s all over Instagram? Treat yo self is no fun if you’re spending money on rose gold highlights in your hair when you’d much rather be getting a Batman costume!
