Unique Date Ideas for When You're Tired of Just Meeting Up
By Thao Nguyen
Don’t get me wrong. I’m a fan of meeting up for drinks/coffee/dinner. It’s a casual date idea that’s low pressure, low cost, and super convenient. Not to mention, any experience can feel amazing when you're experiencing it with someone you like! But sometimes it can get boring and redundant if you’re in a long term relationship or doing a lot of casual dating. If this is a first date, it can be a hinderance for getting to know your companion; alcohol may make you loosen up, but it can also make you reveal too much or cloud your judgement. If you’re looking for a date idea that will change things up, check out the list below.
Mini Golf or Laser Tag
This may sound like an awkward date you had in middle school or something out of a cliche rom-com, but as adults it’s an opportunity to have lots of fun. You can get a little competitive, get your blood pumping, and there will be plenty of opportunities for physical contact. When you’re on the mini golf course, you’ll be given the chance to talk and joke around without too much pressure because you’ll be focused on the game. If the two of you decide to make the switch to laser tag, you can suss out how they do when in competitive situations and you can get a glimpse at how well you and your date can work together to solve a problem (beating a bunch of prepubescent boys).
Bookstore or Library
Call me biased, but I love anything that involves lots of books. You can tell a lot about a person by what they read, and if this is a first date, it’s a great situation to find out their literary tastes. For those of you that have been in long term relationships, this is the perfect opportunity to find out something new about your partner - have them point out a book they always loved as a child but never admitted it to anyone. There’s also something super romantic about walking slowly through tall stacks of books, and this can really inspire some unique conversations. Try making it interesting by choosing books for each other, or get nostalgic by perusing the kids’ section together.
Food truck hopping
Trade bar hopping for this yummy alternative. Choose three different food trucks: one for an appetizer, one for an entree, and one for dessert. If this is a first date and you’re wary of getting in a car with a stranger, try to choose trucks that are within walking distance of each other. I love this date idea for anyone who has a hard time deciding what they want to eat or for anyone who has more an adventurous palate. Food truck hopping is a fun way to eat, get to know each other, and explore your city.
