What We're Listening to this Month: June

By Polarity Staff

Summer is finally here! If you need some soundtrack inspiration for hazy summer nights, long road trips, or lazy days floating around the pool, then look no further. Our staff members have picked five songs each to start the season off right.

  1. Real Love Baby by Father John Misty
The retro vibes on this sweet love song will make you nostalgic for the olden golden days. Perfect for listening to as you share a milkshake with your paramore.

  2. Feel it Still by Portugal. the Man
The funky bass and sax on this phone are guaranteed to make you silly dance. Like always, Portugal. The Man deliver with a song that makes you feel cool just for listening.

  3. No Other Way by Paolo Nutini
Ever since I first discovered Paolo Nutini in middle school, I was convinced he was my soulmate. This passionate ballad of his still makes me weep to this day for the love that will never be.

  4. Despacito by Luis Fonzi ft Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber
Is this song overplayed? Yes. Has it made me a Belieber? No, I’ve been a belieber since before this summer smash came out ;).

  5. Tranquilize by The Killers
I’ll never NOT include something by The Killers on one of these lists, and this dark song featuring the late Lou Reed is one of my favorites of all time.

  1. Staring at the Sun by TV on the Radio
I’ll be watching these guys perform next month, so in the meantime, I’m pumping myself for that moment. This is one of the first songs that introduced me to their music.

  2. Redbone by Childish Gambino
Gambino is the definition of a versatile artist. At first, no lie, I thought I was listening to a soulful woman singing. His live performance of this song on Jimmy Fallon is f*cking great. The man can do no wrong!

  3. Crimewave by Crystal Castles
Crystal Castles has gone through some changes lately; Alice left the duo, and Edith is the new vocalist. But, that hasn’t turned me off from listening to them. This is an oldie, but goodie from when Alice was still around.

  4. Call It Fate, Call It Karma by The Strokes
These guys are #1 on my “Bands I Must See Before I Die”. This song is extremely different from anything they’ve released, but it’s so beautiful and gives me the “old-timey” feel. I would honestly love to dance to this song at my wedding.

  5. Your Ex-Lover is Dead by Stars
I discovered this song while watching Degrassi (they SO went there), when I was younger. Whenever you go through a breakup, have this song ready in your “We Broke Up” playlist.

  1. ifuleave by Musiq Soulchild
Musiq is one of my favorite singers of all time, and this song is just another one of the variety. While joining voices with Mary J. Blige, they agree to let things be over if they think they’re better without one another, but strongly believe they should give things a try.

  2. Karma by Lloyd Banks
I’m a big fan of throwbacks, and this is one of those you naturally come back to every now and then. This song is a reminder that you can be a player, but you’ll eventually meet someone who’ll know the game much better than you, hence, karma will come get you.

  3. Wait by August Alsina
It’s always difficult finding the person of our dreams at the wrong time, or asking them to be patient while we try to figure out where we are mentally, even though it’s not fair to ask that of them.

  4. The Middle by Jimmy Eat World
This one is a good pick-me-up when you’re feeling down because of mistreatment, or because you’re not progressing. It’s a good reminder that regardless of what we’re going through, things will eventually get better.

  5. Living Single by Big Sean
This song describes a very relatable story regarding modern dating, from beginning to end. Big Sean’s starts with talking about his dating lifestyle, Jeremih and Chance continue with how their relationships make them happy. The song ends with Big Sean being called out for his immature ways and him realizing how much he’s messing up.

  1. The Heart Wants What It Wants by Selena Gomez
If you’re looking for a heartbreak song to help you process the emotional turmoil you’re going through, then look no further. Selena’s vulnerability in her voice and lyrics coupled with the trip hop beats really help pull the heartstrings.

  2. Ours by Taylor Swift
No matter what, people will always put their two-cents in about the relationship you’re in. But through it all, it doesn’t matter what people say, because you know you’re in love, and you know you’re happy. Life can make it hard on you two, the love you have for each other is yours.

  3. Shape of You by Ed Sheeran
This is a super upbeat song that is definitely summer-playlist worthy. The song is about a budding romance, but the happy tunes are what keep it on replay.

  4. Stand By You by Rachel Platten
An all-around powerful song that claims your love for someone wholeheartedly. Through thick and thin, you will stand by the person/people you love. You’d even “walk through hell” with them.

  5. Higher- Unspoken
If you need a reminder that you can do all things through God, then this is your song. With its upbeat music, which includes trumpets, “Higher” has the ability to lift your spirits up and remind you that God is good.

  1. Attention by Charlie Puth

  2. Teenage Fever by Drake

  3. Now or Never by Halsey

  4. Coming out Strong by The Weeknd

  5. Escalate by Tsar B

  1. Attention by Charlie Puth
I personally think Charlie Puth is severely underrated. This song is a prime example of his angelic voice and relatable lyrics! It’s a must listen for anyone trying to get over someone who keeps reappearing in their lives.

  2. Teenage Fever by Drake
Again, I finally discovered a relatively new Drake song and now I can’t stop listening to it! Rumor has it that the “If You Had my Love” sample was supposed to be sung by JLO herself before she and Drake called it quits! That alone ought to entice you.

  3. Now or Never by Halsey
Halsey is another super talented singer who in my opinion is underrated. Sing this to a guy if he’s exhibiting f**kboy symptoms!

  4. Coming out Strong by The Weeknd
I’m not crazy about Abel’s new stuff but he knows how to create music that gets stuck in your head and “Coming out Strong” is a prime example of a track that you’ll have on repeat in no time.

  5. Escalate by Tsar B
I heard this song in a dance video and became obsessed with the unique beat and kind of haunting style of the track. It’s definitely worth checking out!
