What We're Listening to this Month: August

Summer is winding down, but the tunes will keep rolling on. Check out our last playlist of the summer and make sure to hit follow on the Spotify playlist linked below.

  1. Easy to Love by Ivan and Alyosha
Ivan and Alyosha’s ballad will have you weeping happy tears as they rekindle your belief that love is out there and it is beautiful and pure.

  2. Ready for You by Haim
Haim’s second album is full of genius, but this song about meeting the right person at the right time is my favorite. It’ll definitely convince you to chase after what you want, even if your past is trying to hold you back.

  3. Perfume by Shaed
Shaed opened for Sir Sly at a concert I went to recently and I immediately fell in love. They’ve got a totally unique and inventive sound that will stick with you for a long, long time.

  4. Fun by Sir Sly
I was lucky enough to see this song performed live a few weeks ago in San Francisco, and it lives up to its name. This anthem about rebelling against expectations is perfect for late summer nights with friends.

  5. Family Affair by Mary J Blige
Sometimes you just need to leave your situations at the door and get rid of all the hateration. This classic will be getting me through the work day all month long.

  1. The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows by Brand New
When I was first getting into rock music, this was one of the first songs I listened to. I was hooked. I have to sing along to it every time, even if I’m in a public place; I can always just sing with a loud whisper.

  2. Blue Monday by New Order
After Ian Curtis, lead singer of Joy Division, committed suicide, the band was reborn into New Order. This song screams 80s synths and has traces of Joy Division, which are all pluses in my book. And Brandon Flowers from The Killers loves them...Brandon, if you see this (which you won’t), hi.

  3. Bulletproof by La Roux
I haven’t heard from this duo in a while, but this song is a reminder that they need to come back soon. Elly’s voice is pretty amazing. I’ve tried to make mine go as high as hers. Note to self: it ain’t happening.

  4. Cute Without the ‘E’ (Cut From the Team) by Taking Back Sunday
I don’t know what it is, but my summer has been filled with throwback bands. Taking Back Sunday is one of those bands that remind me of my awkward moments and all-black clothing phase in 10th grade….the phase has yet to end.

  5. Ooo by Karen O.
This song is only 1:29 long, so no excuses to not give it a try. A short, but sweet song about being in love. I love anything with Karen O. in it.

  1. Summer Nights by Lil Rob
This one just takes me back to my high school days and the idea of summer love. It’s a timeless and unique song, and even now I still find myself tuning into it.

  2. Nobody’s Perfect by J. Cole
One thing you should know about me is that I love J. Cole. Whether I’m in my car, at work, or cleaning at home, this song will most likely be on that playlist. Who can say no to J.Cole and Missy Elliot? That’s right.

  3. Lost in Love by NB Ridaz
This. Song. Gets. Me. Every. Time!!! I don’t know if it’s the actual lyrics, the memories behind it (my then 18 year-old cousin making me memorize this when I was 10), or the Chicana in me vibing with Spanglish.

  4. U Should’ve Known Better by Monica
My girl, Monica is always making me feel some type of way. This is the kind of music that makes people say “music in my day was much better.”

  5. Unforgettable by French Montana
I’m not a fan of French Montana, but one, this song barely contains his vocals, and two, this is definitely a summer jam! It makes me spend my nights at the beach or by the poolside.

  1. How Far I’ll Go by Alessia Cara
Yes, this is from Disney’s Moana, but when I first heard it, I became obsessed! Not only is the beat so catchy, but the overall message is so positive! So many people struggle with choosing the path that everyone around them wants them to take versus what they truly want for themselves, and this song is just another reminder why it’s so important to follow your heart.

  2. Adore You by Miley Cyrus
The lovey-doviest song I’ve ever come across, and I’m in love! If you’ve ever struggled with expressing how much you love your partner, then this song should do it! While its music video is a lot more sexual, it’s the lyrics accompanied by Miley’s vocals and the slow ballad that really deliver this song.

  3. Stay by Zedd and Alessia Cara
A super catchy beat to dance to and meaningful lyrics to sing along to, you can’t get better than this.

  4. I Don’t Wanna Live Forever by Zayn and Taylor Swift
This is kind of old in pop culture current events, but you’ll appreciate revisiting this high energy love song.

  5. Shake it Off by Taylor Swift
An uptempo dance-pop song that never fails to get the energy moving at an awkward party or help somebody “shake off” any rough patches they went through recently. As summer starts coming to an end, we all probably want to face fall with a renewed sense of self-worth and not listen to anything that anybody else has to say.

  1. Super Far by LANY
This has been my go to song lately. I came across it by chance and fell in love with the emotional ride that it took me on.
  2. Thunder by Imagine Dragons
I absolutely love the power that this song projects. Imagine Dragons is so great at conveying a resonant feeling through their music.
  3. Red Mercedes by Amine
As per usual, I’m a little late to this one. I think Amine is great and this It’s also an awesome add to a workout playlist which is my main requirement in music these days. Plus the video is hilarious.
  4. More Than You Know by Axwell /\ Ingrosso
This Swedish Duo takes me back to my time in Europe with their super fun Electro House style. In my opinion, this is the song of the summer.
  5. Here Comes the Sun by The Beatles
After, catching a rerun of The Parent Trap the other day, I re-realized how wonderful the soundtrack is and this is my favorite song from it.
