It’s so easy for many of us to spend so much time fixating on appearance that we tend to forget the most important aspect of our well-being: the mind. This could be partly due to the idea that controlling our thoughts and the way our mind works is beyond our control, but it isn’t! Like anything else, you can develop healthy habits for your brain to create a much more positive mindset. In fact, many of the successful people I know and many of the personal development books I’ve read will tell you that the key to success and happiness lies with the way you think. They know that because they’ve discovered and mastered the art of a powerful mindset, something we’ve yet to completely discover and learn.

Because a positive and healthy mind is essential to your overall well-being, it’s only natural that the first article of the year be focused on mind care and cultivating the best, most powerful and positive mind you can achieve. So here are 14 ways you can develop a strong intellect that will lead you to a more balanced life. Read Self Development Books

We can always learn something from someone and the best way to learn something about yourself and improve your own person at the same time is through self development books. Reading the words from someone who practices mind care and who understands the importance and significance of mental well-being and the power of positivity can greatly improve your way of thinking and outlook on life.  

Remember Positive Moments

Have you noticed that we tend to remember and dwell on negative things that have happened to us in the past? It’s almost like our minds are programmed to be this way, but I’ve found that the best way to combat this is to counteract with a positive memory. But take it a step further by remembering positive moments throughout the day and you’ll start to notice an increased level of happiness and contentedness.

Schedule Daydreaming

Our world can be so fast-paced that we need to take the time to slow down here and there. As a writer and a creative, I sometimes push myself too hard by forcing myself to write or work on projects, but my best work usually comes after I’ve allowed myself to just relax and get lost in my head to daydreams. So be sure to let your mind go free for a bit and daydream!

Move Your Body

Notice how I don’t say ‘exercise.’ The terms ‘exercise’ or ‘working out’ can sometimes be taken in a negative connotation because people associate them with hour long sessions at the gym or a near-death sweat fest. That association can stress you out and take up negative space in your mind. Instead, focus on moving your body. This can mean going for a walk after sitting down for so long at your desk, dancing to your favorite song, or building your muscles to create a stronger you. In moving your body, you allow yourself to declutter your mind and relax by focusing on what your body can do instead of other things that are stressing you out.

Unplug

It’s no secret that spending hours on your phone or the computer can be damaging to yourself, especially when you’re constantly bombarded with other people’s celebrations, huge milestones, and deceiving pictures of a perfect life. Unplugging can force you to be present in the moment and appreciate what you have.

Surround Yourself with Like-Minded People

The saying “you are who your friends are” rings true, so be selective with who you spend your time with. If you want to be a business owner and venture out into new territory but your circle of friends have a limited mindset that doesn’t allow you to grow or find support, then you may want to find some new friends.

Listen to Positive Music

The lyrics count! I’ve heard so many people claim that they listen to a song only because of the beat or the melody, but the lyrics and overall message of the song will creep into your subconscious whether you want it to or not, so be wary of what you listen to! If you listen to music with an overall positive message, then you’ll notice a difference in the way you perceive things.

Challenge Your Brain

As humans, we’re meant to continually grow and push our limits. This includes our brain. Have you ever learned to ride a bike and then not practice for years and when you finally get back on, you have to learn to maneuver the bike again? The same thing happens with our brains. If we don’t continually push ourselves and challenge ourselves, then it becomes harder to think critically and creatively. So feed it by reading, learning something new, or working on upcoming goals!

Relish Quietness

Immerse yourself in nature or sit quietly in your room and let your mind wander. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty in this world and the magnificent ways your body works together to keep you healthy and alive. Absorbing the peace in stillness can help you practice what it means to live in the moment and can help you escape the busyness you experience in your day-to-day life.

Send Love

You can’t really send love while knee-deep in negativity can you? By sending love to someone else, you’ll force yourself to enter a state of appreciation and respect. Only on these grounds can you also find love and respect for yourself and fill your mind with positive energy.

Do What Makes You Happy

It’s so easy to get so caught up in the humdrum of everyday life and forget to do the things that fill our hearts with joy. By doing at least one thing you love every day, you’ll find something to look forward to even when you’re having a bad day.

Compliment Yourself

Do you like the way your hair looks today? Tell yourself that. Do you like the way you love abundantly? Say it out loud! Whatever it is that you appreciate about yourself, bring it to light by saying it to yourself in front of a mirror, smile, and be thankful for it. We’re all amazing human beings, but sometimes we need to be reminded of it by telling it to ourselves.

Pick Up a Good Habit

Whether that’s getting into the habit of recycling, meditation, or drinking more water, picking up a good habit can improve your life significantly over time. It also makes you feel good and frees up your mind to focus on other important things in life.

Filter Your Social Media Feed

Block or unfollow, do whatever you need to do to create a more peaceful and positive environment on your social media apps. It only takes one photo or Facebook status to rouse up negative energies and foster a bitter mentality. While you can choose to not let things get to you, it’s easier and more helpful to just put those people or things out of your sight. Protect your mind! You come first.
