10 Rules of a Boss Babe

By Vanessa Palencia

I’m sure you’re familiar with all the motivational and inspirational #bossbabequotes sprawled all over social media. Whether they help you get through those painfully slow Monday mornings or pull you through the mid-week slumps, phrases like “Hustle and Heart will set you apart” [The Sophisticated Gal] and “If you didn’t wake up with some goals, then go back to sleep” [Boss Babe, Inc.], make you want to be a part of this bad-ass empowered women community. In fact, you probably have a Pinterest board dedicated to all these empowering quotes hoping that by reading them on a consistent basis, you’ll become a boss babe yourself.

Luckily for you, you can, but not just by reading the quotes on a daily basis. You see, there’s a common misconception that boss babes are born, but that isn’t true. Ask any boss babe and most will tell you that they had to learn to shift their gears and step out of their comfort zones more than once to mold themselves into the boss babe they are today. So if you’re looking to step up your game and embrace your inner boss, then here are some general rules every boss babe follows to empower their own lives.

1. Be confident

One of the most important traits a boss babe can have is confidence. You’ve probably heard of the phrase confidence is key, and there’s a reason for it. To sell anything, a product or a message, you have to deliver it with confidence or else you risk losing people’s trust. The same can be applied in your own life. You have to be confident in everything you do because without confidence, you can undermine your skills and capabilities and underestimate your worth, which can spell out disaster for your future success.

2. Learn to say “No”

Whether it’s due to peer pressure or the overwhelming desire to want to help everyone, every boss babe knows the importance of saying ‘no.’ Sometimes you need to draw the line before you find yourself knee-deep in something you weren’t passionate about in the first place or before you become inundated with projects or tasks. Saying ‘no’ protects you from overloading and from committing yourself to something that is irrelevant to your goals.

3. Enforce boundaries

It’s extremely important that you set boundaries in all aspects of your life, but it’s essential that you enforce them. Don’t be a pushover when it comes to requesting payments from clients or continuously allowing someone negative into your life. Set your boundaries and reinforce them to avoid potentially sticky or awkward situations because honestly, ain’t nobody got time for that.

4. Manage time efficiently

Like it or not, time management is crucial to being a productive worker. A successful boss babe, whether the boss of her own company or simply the boss of her life, understands that in order to get work done and make things happen, her time must be managed efficiently. When it comes to chasing dreams and achieving goals, no time is wasted. Remember to schedule self-care as well because you can’t run on ‘empty!’

5. Stay uncomfortable

You can’t deny that it’s so easy to get comfortable. You can get comfortable with your routine, you can get comfortable with your knowledge and skills, and you can get comfortable with your paycheck! But the thing is, comfortability doesn’t challenge you to grow. And without growth, you can’t expect to live to your fullest potential, and the very definition of a boss babe is a woman who thirsts for continuous growth.

6. Be self-motivated

This goes without saying. You can’t rely on others all the time for motivation because they have to take care of themselves, too. You need to find motivation within. Without motivation, it can be difficult to pursue dreams and goals with passion and dedication. It all starts with empowering yourself.

7. Build a network of meaningful relationships

Sometimes you can’t do it all on your own. It’s okay to ask for help. As human beings, we thrive off of human connections. However, make sure that the relationships you form are meaningful and beneficial. Any relationships that are detrimental to your health need to be terminated immediately.

8. Continue learning and growing

As mentioned in #5, boss babes thirst for continuous growth. This means constantly growing your mind by learning new things, picking up new hobbies, or strengthening/adding to your skill set. Personally, I’m a big lover of self-development books, so I make sure to read one chapter a day to expand my knowledge and increase my self-confidence. Whatever you decide to pick up, make sure it becomes a habit because consistency is key.

9. Serve others

True bosses are leaders. Yes, these words are synonymous, but the symbolism and representation behind them are different. Anyone can be a boss and tell people what to do, but only leaders can help guide others where they want or need to be. Notice the difference?

10. Empower women

Last, but definitely not least, as leaders, boss babes seek to empower other women to love themselves and pursue their own dreams and goals. They understand that there is no competition in this community, only encouragement and motivation. So before you assume your role in the boss babe community, make sure that you adjust your mindset to one that is ready to serve and empower.
