International Women's Day 2018

International Women's Day 2018

By Polarity Staff

This year, we challenged ourselves to use one word to describe women. Of course, it would be impossible to fully sum up such a diverse group of people with just one word, nor would we want to lump all women into one category. But there are certainly some words that encompass the spirit of what it means to be female. Check out what we all had to say, then let us know in the comments or on social media what word you would use to describe women.

Thao - Resilient

There are so many ways we can describe women. We can talk about their spirit. We can talk about their beauty. But if I were to choose one word, it would be resilient. The last year has shown me how much women are capable of coming back from. Case in point, Kesha’s, “Praying.” Her ability to rise above her experiences, and to still find it in her heart to wish for change from her attacker is a true testament to the strength of women. Women are constantly being tried and tested. Yet I’ve rarely seen our resilience waver, and there is very little else that makes me more happy and proud to be a woman.

Alisha- Balance

Society is constantly trying to force women into categories: Soft or strong. Smart or sexy. Kind or powerful. The way I see it, being a woman is all about balance. Women are all of these things. These characteristics don't have to contradict each other. I know so many stunning women who are incredibly compassionate, strong, and intelligent while also being feminine and nurturing. Women can be anything and everything and I feel blessed to be one and live amongst them.

Izamar - Perseverance

I think of my mom crossing the desert to get to the U.S. for a better life, hungry and close to death. I think of my mom asking for directions in a foreign country, unacquainted with the language, terrified of the unknown. I think of my mom crying in silence, away from her 5 kids, trying to figure out solutions to our problems.

She persevered. Like her, many women have and will continue to persevere. The word perseverance is one I will always attribute to a woman. I’ve had my share of struggles, moments that I sometimes relive in my mind and think “How the f*ck did I make it through that?!” Our endurance is high. Our perseverance is boundless. It’s amazing.

Vanessa -  Invincible

Women are warriors because we deal with so many day-to-day activities while handling our own personal struggles and emotions. But when you combine forces with other equally powerful women, we become truly invincible. We don't let anything get us down. In fact, most women I know turn trials and tribulations into a propeller that pushes them over the edge. I'm proud to be part of this beautiful species.

Elizabeth - Unf*ckwithable

Nothing can compare to the adversity women face on a daily basis. Whether it be the catcalls, work discrimination, period cramps, mom duties, expected sexy wife duties, boss duties, etc., we still excel in the face of adversity. We don’t let society’s expectations of us deteriorate our self-worth, but instead, we rise above it all and create our own definition that’s self-empowering. We are fierce and unf*ckwithable.
