What We're Listening to This Month: June
By Polarity Staff
Summers were made for making memories. What better way to do that than with songs that you can take with you for a lifetime? We've created another playlist that will make you want to dance the night away throughout the rest of June! Check out what we're listening to below and let us know in the comments what you're listening to this month!
1. Carry Me Home - Jorja Smith
Jorja Smith has the voice I wished I had (think Amy Winehouse meets Lauryn Hill) and it lends perfectly to this forlorn love song.
2. Pink Lemonade - James Bay
This might be my song of the summer. A departure from his typical style, this James Bay single is fun, energetic, and has the perfect lyrics to shout along to in your car.
3. Toxic - Britney Spears
It’s not summer for me until I’ve sang and danced along to Toxic 150 times in a row. If you don’t consider this one of the best songs of the century, you’re wrong.
4. Rocking Chair - The Districts
I underestimated The Districts when I first saw them open for the Arctic Monkeys a few years ago, but I am so glad I gave them another chance. Their latest album is great, but Rocking Chair is one of their older singles that I can listen to again and again.
5. Home - Bruno Major
Easily the most romantic song I’ve heard in a long time - but not in a cloying way at all! Home is a sweet, simple song that’ll make you want to cry and smile and call your loved one immediately.
1. Pretective Boy - Skating Polly
I discovered this band in April, and I’ve been hooked since. These girls began their band at a very young age, and the amount of talent that oozes out of them is impressive. There are a few songs of theirs that remind me of Nirvana or a punk girl band, but this one has a cute and catchy tune.
2. Garden Ornaments - Voodoos
Sometimes, the Spotify “Discover Weekly” playlist gets it right. This Glasgow band is pretty new, and their indie punk sound is something I can get into.
3. Le Disko - Shiny Toy Guns
It’s been a few years since I’ve listened to this song, and I get reminded of high school eyeliner, wearing black, and hanging out with friends in the 3rd floor staircase.
4. Soft Shock - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Karen O. is my queen, and this song gives me a warm and sweet feeling. For some reason, it makes me want to skip and sing along.
5. Pousse Pas - Vive La Fête
Again, the “Discover Weekly” playlist made me listen. I have no idea what is being sung in this song, but I’m in love with the voice, the beat, the vocals, etc. I’m inclined to listen to more songs by this Belgium band.
1. So Will I (100 Billion X) - Hillsong
This is a Christian song, but the way it’s written is so beautiful. The lyrics evoke your imagination and tugs at your heartstrings. Even if you’re not a religious person, hearing this song really makes you see the world in a different light and helps you gain a deep appreciation for the wonders of the world.
2. Reckless Love - Cory Asbury
Okay, so this one is most definitely a Christian song, but I absolutely love it! It’s a great reminder for the spiritual person that God is ever-loving and always watching out for you. I love listening to this every time I’m feeling down and need a little pick-me-up.
3. Grace - Rachel Platten
For those of you that have been losing a little faith in yourself, in love, or in life, this song is for you. It’s a much slower song, and the lyrics will force you to feel all your feelings out (prepare to cry), but it really breathes life back into your heart and soul. Remember, you are not alone.
4. 1000 Ships - Rachel Platten
Another love song? Yup. Because you can’t really have summer without a summery romance song. This is one of Rachel’s earlier songs, but it’s so cute, airy, and fun.
5. Swimming in Stars - Wayfarers
I first heard this song in the movie The Kissing Booth and fell in love! It’s such a cute, romantic, yet upbeat song that can get your heart pumping for excitement, whether that’s for a future date night or a night out at the club. I’ll definitely be adding this to my workout playlist.
1. Here I Am - Rick Ross
This one always reminds me of summertime and really gives me old school vibes that I’m always here for. Lo-ving-it!
2. February 3rd - Jorja Smith
I’m a fan of soft R&B playing in the background when I’m alone at home - either in the patio or simply enjoying solitude in my living room. Let me tell you that this song definitely makes that playlist.
3. Go - Alex Da Kid
This one’s a perfect one to have in the background when enjoying an evening outdoors by yourself with a glass of wine. The beat and H.E.R.’s amazing voice is just...everything.
4. Nice For What - Drake
Another perfect-for-summertime song. And, per usual, Drake came in clutch with this one all while posing a rhetorical, yet thought-provoking question that’s easily answered with a shoulder shrug.
5. Ring - Cardi B
First of all, this entire album was everything. Secondly, this song automatically became one of my favorites. Cardi B’s rapping along with Kehlani’s beautiful voice really sets the mood for reminiscing on an old flame.
