What We're Listening to this Month: July
We're right in the middle of summer and the days are only getting hotter. But nothing goes better with a hot summer day than some ice cream and good music. Check out what we're listening to this month and then let us know what's been on your playlist!
Put Your Head on My Shoulder - Paul Anka
We’re still in the midst of wedding season, and I love this ‘60s love song. It’s definitely on my wedding playlist. Not that I have one *laughs nervously*.
Summertime - Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald
Nothing says “lazy sunday” except for this song (and The Lonely Island’s “Lazy Sunday”). This classic makes even the hottest and most humid of summer days romantic and magical.
Put Your Records On - Corinne Bailey Rae
There’s something about Corinne Bailey Rae’s voice that makes me feel like I’m laying on a hammock under a shady tree. Another must listen for when it gets too hot in the summer.
Party in the USA - Miley Cyrus
Normally my 4th of July anthem is “Born in the USA.” Haha, that’s a lie. Miley Cyrus’s best song (fight me on this) is a must for July. Keep an eye out for that to become law any day now.
Ain’t No Mountain High Enough - Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell
My cousins and I had a full dance routine for this that we choreographed ourselves.I listen to this every summer to remind myself of simpler times.
Taste - Tyga, Offset
Currently on the very top of my summatime playlist and blasting in my car when I’m in need of something new and more upbeat. Plus, who doesn’t like some Tyga and Offset?
That’s How You Feel - Drake
Well, he did it again. I had to detain myself from making this list all about him. But damn, I’m definitely a big fan of the Nicki Minaj samples used in this song.
Boo’d Up - Ella Mai
This one has been out for a while already, but for some reason I’ve recently been playing it at a minimum of once per day. (I may or may not sing it at the top of my lungs.) #CantTellMeNothin
After Dark - Drake
This one gives me old school vibes and I’m loving it. I’m not too sure if it’s the beat or Static Major in the background - or both.
What Do You Want - Jerrod Niemann
Breaking News: I used to be a huge country music fan in high school. Big shocker, huh? About two weeks ago, I literally kept repeating the words “what do you want” out loud and this song immediately came to mind because the sentiment of the song aligned with mine. Fan of country music or not, this one’s definitely a heart wrencher.
Hopelessly Devoted to You - Olivia Newton John
I used to sing this song as a tween. I took pride in being a hopeless romantic, so I would sing this at the top of my lungs and dedicate it to whatever boy crush I had at the time. I believe it’s a super sweet song perfect for summer when all the summer romances start.
Is it Love? - Play
This is such a 2000s song, but it brings me back to my childhood days and the innocence that comes with first love. It’s perfect for all those hopeless romantics or those who are eager to find love this summer.
Dancing Queen - Abba
Such a classic!! It makes me want to dance every time I hear this song. I know, cliche, but I’m telling the truth. And I hate dancing.
Honey, Honey - Mamma Mia Soundtrack
This may be the first public place where I announce that I’m engaged. For that reason, I’m scouring all the love songs (have you noticed?) and was reminded of how much I loved this song when I first heard it in the Mamma Mia movie. It’s so sweet, upbeat, airy, and full of tender romance. I love it!
Why Not - Hilary Duff
Yes, another 2000s song, but I still get chills listening to this song even to this day. The song talks about taking chances despite the risks to go after what makes you happy and alive. I think we could all use that reminder every now and then, because life is meant to be enjoyed. So give this a listen as you cruise down the streets and start thinking about everything you really want to do in life and let this song ignite the fire within you.
Violet Hill - Coldplay
I might not be into Coldplay’s newer albums, but I can’t deny that some of their old songs always hit me in the feels. I remember listening to this song when it first came out, and listening now, it sends a nostalgic feeling that makes me tear up.
The Rover - Interpol
They’re back, and if their new album is anything like this song, I’m all about it! The guitars and Paul’s signature voice have me feeling excited about what’s to come. I will, hopefully, see them in Berkeley in October.
Smalltown Boy - Bronski Beat
Brandon Flowers’ song “I Can Change” samples the beat from this song. The original song is actually pretty good! If you yearn for a good 80s song, this is one of them.
Little Shadow - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
This band has some of the best songs. Karen O.’s voice is flawless, I can listen to her all day. In this song, she’s singing to her shadow, but it means so much more than that. I’m saying it now: I want this song played at my funeral.
I Hate Everything About You - Three Days Grace
Singing this song as a sexless and nerdy teenager….it makes me cringe now that I sang it at the top of my lungs. But it’s one of those songs that are meant to be sang loudly!
