What We're Listening to This Month: August
By Polarity Staff
It feels like just yesterday we were putting together our playlist for January, but now its somehow AUGUST?!?!Summer is coming to an end and we're actually pretty excited for fall. Check out what we're listening as summer fizzles out and then let us know what you're listening to!
For Elise - Saint Motel
Saint Motel manages to be a fun, inventive band, that sounds super retro by drawing on old influences. This song samples Beethoven’s Fur Elise, but it’ll still have you dancing.
Before He Cheats - Carrie Underwood
I’ve never been cheated on, but damn if I don’t feel this song. Nothing feels more empowering than scream-singing this song at an imaginary dirtbag.
Big God - Florence and the Machine
There’s something really magical and mystical about Florence Welch, even though she has one of the biggest voices of our time. Big God is a dark song that will have you contemplating everything you thought about love.
Too Late for Lullabies - James Morrison
James Morrison has plenty of happy songs, but something about his voice is so suited to ballads and songs about heartbreak, and this tearjerker is no exception.
Nobody but You - Kimbra
If I heard anyone else singing “Don’t want nobody but you,” I’d roll my eyes at how cheesy they are, but Kimbra manages to make that lyric sound really romantic.
Big Bank - YG
This one always gets me in a good mood! Whether it’s an “ayeeee” one-liner from YG or Big Sean (one of my favorites), or Nicki’s entire verse, I know it’ll make me want to start dancing.
Signs - Drake
Lately I’ve been Draking and Driving, Daydreaming and Draking - all things Drake *sigh*. Can you blame me though?
El Farsante (Remix) - Ozuna
Don’t get me wrong, the original version is amazing, but if you know Romeo Santos, then you know why I chose this version. Warning: feels.
Never Be the Same - Camila Cabello
This. One. Gives. Me. Feels. Too. [Insert overwhelmed emoji here.] Seriously though, I don’t know why but this song just gets to me.
Te Bote - Nio Garcia
I have no clue why, but this song makes me think of my time in Brazil and dancing under the sun, which is perfect for summertime! Also an empowering song if you just broke up with bae.
You Say - Lauren Daigle
I was struggling this past month or so with my identity. I had spent so much of my life defining myself by what others expected from me, but this song reminds me that there is someone greater who believes in me despite it all, despite all of my self-perceived weaknesses. This song gives me strength to keep going on.
Skyscraper - Demi Lovato
I really leaned on this song this past month. Not because I had people out trying to tarnish my name, but because I was in self-destruct mode. This song really gives you shivers when you sing it from the perspective of yourself. You can either watch yourself bleed or you can rise up.
Walking on Sunshine - Aly & AJ
I first heard this song back when I was a kid and fell in love with how much I literally felt like I was walking on sunshine. It really does wonders in lifting your spirit up and getting you back into a feel-good mood.
Grace Got You - Mercy Me
I can’t emphasize enough how much I love this song. It serves as a great reminder to live in the moment and to be grateful for everything you have in life.
Sparks - Hilary Duff
You can’t pass up a high-energy song that’s literally full of colors. Plus, you can never go wrong with a classic Hilary song. It’s perfect as we start heading into the last month of summer, where we all need a little jolt of energy.
Malas Intenciones - Erik Rubin
Growing up, I was all about Mexican soap operas. Some, especially those targeted for young people, had good music. The soap opera “Rebelde” was huge back then; I never actually watched it, it would be on as I was getting off school. I’m watching it on Netflix now, and I’m loving some of the songs. This is one of them. Thank you, Spotify!
APESH*T - The Carters
My Polarity playlists haven’t really included any hip-hop (except Outkast), but when I heard this song on YouTube, I ended up liking the beat. I can officially say I know Bey’s fast rap part. The music video is visually grand and extravagant. They totally made it.
Roland - Interpol
I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it. I haven’t listened in years, and have fallen in love all over again. Paul’s voice makes me nostalgic for the rock music scene back then that involved Interpol, The Strokes, The Killers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc.
Come On To Me - Paul McCartney
I watched Sir Paul’s carpool karaoke with James Corden, and they were singing this song. Didn’t take me long to look it up on Spotify. Catchy tune, fun lyrics, the man still has it.
Dark Saturday - Metric
It’s always nice to hear new stuff from Metric. Loving this new single, sounds very gritty. Emily sounds great, as always. Does that woman every age? I’m looking forward to the new album.
